ChemSec engagement in the revision of RoHS

The RoHS Directive, dealing with restrictions of hazardous chemicals relevant for the electrical and electronic sector, is now under review.

A first proposal for the review was presented by the European Commission in December 2008. The Council of Ministers work on the dossier in the Council working group and the European Parliament will have it’s fist committee meeting regarding this during fall. Vote in the parliament committee and plenary will probably be during spring of 2010.

NGOs as well as OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are looking at ways to improve the proposal in order  to increase the benefits for consumer health and the environment.

ChemSec is actively engaged in monitoring and influencing the review of the RoHS directive and is a leading participant in a broad coalition representing major EEE (Electrical and Electronic Equipment) producers and NGOs. ChemSec, CPA and EEB have developed a draft position for the review of RoHS. This NGO coalition will during fall 2009 write amendments to the Commission proposal and spread these amendments to key persons, organisations and business. Leading manufacturers of electronic products will be invited to support the up-coming position to encourage EU-regulators to strengthen the RoHS proposal.

ChemSec major issues regarding the RoHS revision is to phase-out organic bromine and chlorine in the electronics sector, reducing the number of exemptions and facilitating verification of compliance for authorities.
