In a notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Commission announces that it intends to add four phthalates to the list of restricted substances under RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic devices).
The four phthalates concerned are DEHP, BBP, DBP and DiBP. The restriction is proposed to take effect in July 2019 and applies for all electrical and electronic equipment on the EU market, except medical devices and monitoring and control instruments, which will have an additional 2 years to comply.
– We welcome this restriction but regret that the Commission does not add more substances to the restriction list in RoHS, says Frida Hök, ChemSec Policy Advisor. From our point of view more concerned chemicals used in these products have been identified and should also be put forward for restriction.
